Library Policies
Gar-Field High School Library
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Library Media Center is to help our students and staff to become active and effective users of information, promote a lifelong love of reading and learning, and to provide materials that support the academic goals of Gar-Field High School. We will also provide a safe, supportive learning environment with opportunities for each student to develop the skills and knowledge to become a responsible, successful citizen.
Many tasks go into fulfilling this mission:
- selecting and organizing materials for research projects
- assisting students in finding appropriate materials
- providing multi-media materials for students and teachers
- training students and staff in information literacy skills
- training students and staff in the use of various technology tools
- maintaining the library's print, electronic and multimedia collection
- developing the library's collection to represent current and authoritative information
Library Policies 2009-2010
The following policies apply at all times in the Gar-Field High School Library:
- Students may use the Library to read or to write, to complete homework, to prepare for a test, to work on research, to play chess, or to prepare papers, PowerPoints, and other projects. The Library may not be used for socializing.
- In order to maintain a classroom environment, the Library will not be available as a walk through during the lunch shifts.
- During instructional time, a student coming to the library must present a pass to the Librarians; also students can come to the library with a pass during lunch shifts.
- Each teacher may send a maximum of 3 unescorted students (with a pass) during each block. Larger groups of students may not be sent unattended to the Library.
- Substitute teachers may not bring classes to the Library. In addition, substitute teachers may not write passes for students to come to the Library.
- Food and drink (including water) are not allowed in the Library. This policy is for the protection of the collections and equipment, and applies to all staff and students.
- Since the Library is an instructional area between 7:15 A.M. and 3:15 P.M., electronic devices including (but not limited to) cell phones, MP3 players, earphones, and other wireless devices must be turned off and remain out of sight in the Library.
